Joe Penney

is a journalist, photographer, and filmmaker based in New York City. He is also the co-founder of the Mali-based news website Sahelien.com. He was Reuters’ chief photographer in West and Central Africa from 2012-2016, covering the 2014 revolution in Burkina Faso, the 2013 French intervention in Mali, the war against Boko Haram in Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon, elections in nearly a dozen countries, and more. His photographs have been featured in most major news media, and he has written for The New York Times, Reuters, The Nation, The Intercept, The New York Review of Books, Quartz Africa, Business Insider, and many other outlets. He is the co-director of the short film “Sam, Underground”.
